A lifelong vegan became the female champion at the recent North Pole Marathon.
Fiona Oakes has been vegan from the age of six and was the first women to cross the finish line at the recent 26.2 mile race, in which she had to compete in freezing conditions, with temperatures at times plummeting to -40c.
Braving the extreme weather conditions and finding herself in unique circumstances, temperatures dropped so low that a man’s clothes froze to his skin.
Oakes, who owns an animal sanctuary in Essex, will run between 80 to 90 miles a week as part of her training regime. In the next year, she is making her way round the world, completing the seven continent marathon challenge, which will end with a marathon in the Antarctica in November.
“Although I am vegan, I manage to intake a lot of the protein I need from nuts and vegetables. I eat a lot of pulses, and stick to quite a basic diet, pretty normal really just no dairy or milk,” she said.
